Energised by the creativeness of Flinders Islanders.
In love with all things handmade.
The Purple Swamphen is a haven of handmade whimsies and practicalities. Most items are made on Flinders Island by local artists and craftspeople, but some treasures are sourced from Tasmania and beyond.
We are also passionate about our island’s environment, and stock a growing range of reusable items to replace single-use plastic. Help us reduce waste on Flinders Island by carrying reusable shopping bags, water bottles, coffee cups & straws!
Flinders Island is the largest in the Furneaux Group of islands. Partway between Tasmania and Victoria, it’s a place of wild beauty and serene farmland. It has a permanent population of around 800 people, who all contribute something unique to the island lifestyle. Even though we are only a half-hour plane flight from Launceston we are classed as remote and isolated, which encourages resourcefulness, ingenuity and creativity among our residents.
Top tip for visitors: wave at every car that goes past. It’s that sort of place. Welcome home.
