The Purple Swamphen is a haven of handmade whimsies and practicalities. Most items are made on Flinders Island by local artists and craftspeople, but some treasures are sourced from Tasmania and beyond.

marshall bay flinders island home to 800 residents
Flinders Island is the largest in the Furneaux Group of islands in Bass Strait. It has a permanent population of around 800 people, although this number swells in summer as absentee landowners and visitors come to enjoy the relaxed beach lifestyle. Even though we are only a half-hour plane flight from Launceston we are classed as remote and isolated, which encourages resourcefulness, ingenuity and creativity among our residents.

Top tip for visitors: wave at every car that goes past. It’s that sort of place. Welcome home.
